GENERAL

The Istanbul University Veterinary Faculty which located in Avcılar is offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses of research in 16 different departments.

Departments Departments with in the Faculty of veterinary medicine are; Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Morphology, Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Food Hygiene and Technology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Internal Diseases, Surgery, Obstetric and Gynecology, Reproduction and Artificial Insemination, Animal Husbandry, Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases .

TEACHING AND RESEARCH
Education: Istanbul University, Veterinary Medicine Faculty gives education within international standards of contemporary science and technological applications in accordance with country’s general economy, health and animal husbandry policies. Veterinary Medicine Curriculum is consisting of five years. This five years education includes lectures and practical courses.

The second semester of the fifth year is the ‘Veterinary Surgeon Maturation Education’ period. During this period, students spend some time in every department to renew their knowledge by practice. During the summer holiday of the fourth year a ‘summer apprenticeship’ is carried out. At the end of fifth year, students who succeeded the academic curriculum granted to veterinary surgeon degree.

Academic Calendar
Each academic year comprises of a fall and spring semester. A net of 14 weeks of education is accomplished in each semester. The Fall Semester starts on the first week of October and generally finishes on the first week of January. The Spring Semester generally starts on the second half of February and ends in the last week of May
Also, a “summer school” is conducted in the faculty every year during the June-August months.

Apprenticeship: Some of our students can go abroad especially to European countries for their apprenticeship with the help of IASTE or by their own facilities. Other students can carry out their apprenticeship in the faculty’s departments or at official and private veterinary clinics.

Scholarships: University of Istanbul, Credit and Dormitory Association, Social Cooperation and Solidarity Foundation, Turkish Education Foundation, some banks, companies and societies constitute the source. Available scholarships are announced to students every year.

Internet Facilities: All Campuses of Istanbul University are connected to the internet via lines of speeds ranging 512 KB to 2 MB. It is possible to connect to internet from all departments of our faculty. Also a computer room is available and all our students can benefit from this service.

Farm Facility: Faculty has a farm located in 15 km far From Avcilar Campus, which consists of dairy cattle, poultry, sheep and feed preparation units.

Student Number: The student capacity of the Faculty is 160 students per year. The number of students who are now continuing to study in the faculty are nearly 960.
Fees: Faculty education fees are determined by the Ministries Council yearly.

STUDENT LIFE

Restaurants: There are student-dining halls in the student culture center and a student dormitory located in the Avcilar Campus. Lunch and dinner are given there at a low fee for students. Also, the faculty has a student canteen.

Accommodation: There is a student dormitory in Avcilar Campus with the capacity of 2200 students and there are private dormitories around Avcilar. Students can also prefer to rent a house around the Avcilar Campus.

Health Care and Insurance: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has a medical center in the Student Culture Center operating with ten doctors, a dentist and three nurses. An ambulance is also on duty in Avcilar Campus.

Library: The Library of the faculty possesses more than 5000 local and international books, journals and documents. It receives 70 local and 80 international journals monthly. All students can benefit from this library unlimited during working hours.

Sportive and Cultural Activities: The students of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine have the opportunity to achieve their sporting or recreational interests indoors and outdoors. Two tennis courts, a basketball, a volleyball court and a mini football field of Campus are available for students. Student clubs such as Natural Sports Club, Dance Club, Computer Club, Theatre Club, Photograph Club etc.. are also open to the interested students at Faculty.
